About the Item
This dynamic aquaprint by Peter Klasen, a leading figure of the French Figuration Narrative movement, presents the artist’s unmistakable visual vocabulary. Bold red and yellow fields, torn paper layers, industrial hazard symbols, and a monochrome photographic fragment converge to create a powerful, graphic composition. Klasen’s signature interplay between urban codes, mechanical forms, and the human body is fully evident here.
The work is numbered 101/150 in the lower left corner and signed and dated 2012 in the lower right. Presented in a sleek black frame that enhances its strong visual structure, the piece is ready to hang, with an embossed stamp visible on the reverse and a professional wire mounting system.
A highly representative and collectible work by Klasen, ideal for contemporary interiors and discerning art collections.
PETER KLASEN'S BIOGRAPHY:
Born in Lübeck in 1935, Peter Klasen is a German painter, photographer, and sculptor whose work has achieved international recognition and left a lasting mark on the history of contemporary art.
Coming from a family deeply immersed in artistic culture — with an uncle, Karl Christian Klasen, a former student of Otto Dix, and a grandfather who was both a collector and patron — he discovered painting, drawing, and techniques such as lithography and airbrushing at a very early age. The writings of Dostoevsky, Kafka, and Thomas Mann also shaped his sensibility and sharpened his critical view of the world.
A major figure of the Nouvelle Figuration or Narrative Figuration movement, Klasen established himself through a distinctive and instantly recognizable visual language. His work, inspired by the industrial world, brings together pressure gauges, metal plates, locks, tarpaulins, hydraulic hoses, logos, numbers, and photographic fragments drawn from magazines or posters. With a masterful sense of contrast, he explores the hostility of modern urban environments and the commodification of the human body.
His iconic approach, which captures with remarkable clarity the tensions and contradictions of contemporary society, has resonated worldwide, making Klasen one of the most influential European artists of his generation.
The recent collaboration between l’Estampe and the artist has enriched the Lacan collection by introducing the powerful universe of Nouvelle Figuration. In his aquagravures, Klasen continues to express his critical gaze: industry, the body, advertisements, manufactured objects, and vehicles come together to form a sharp reflection of our social environment.
