About the Item
Richly colored and stunningly beautiful, this 1920s depiction of a female figure in Classic Greek garb, her hair in a bun and her dress radiantly dyed candy-apple red, was painted by Paul Théophile Robert, a Swiss artist. His style here seems to be a combination of Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau (or Jugenstil) and the emerging Art Deco style of the 1920s, all richly expressed in tones of red, deep blue and green. The artist was highly cosmopolitan, studying in France and Italy, traveling frequently between Switzerland, Germany and France, and hobnobbing with Amédée Ozenfant, Le Corbusier, André Lhote and Gino Severini. The painting is gouache and watercolor on paper or board, and is framed. The artist's monogram is evident in the lower righthand corner. (Dimensions include frame.)
