About the Item

Extraordinary art deco work by the renowned Monegasque artist Pierre-Ernest KOHL (1897-1985) Portrait of Kiki de Montparnasse , in its original frame in carved and gilded wood. The frame has a small accident in a corner that it,s easy to repair and that does not affect the entire work Pierre Ernest Kohl is a painter, born February 3, 1897 in Monaco, his grandfather was the founder of the famous Monte-Carlo Casino. His father was a director of large hotels, born in Germany, of French maternal ancestry and a mother born Schneider of English maternal ancestry. Pierre Kohl's early youth was a perpetual journey through the hotel seasons; Monte-Carlo, Margate England, Beaulieu s/Mer, Beatenberg, Bordighera. 1909 - Arrival in Lausanne. His parents became Swiss citizens in 1913 and acquired the bourgeoisie of Lausanne where they operated the Ste-Luce hotel residence in Petit-Chêne for a long time. 1910 - Undertakes industrial studies in Lausanne, up to the bachot. 1915 - One-year internship as a designer in the Monod-Laverrière workshop in Lausanne, then studies Fine Arts at the Loup Academy in Lausanne. 1919 - Married in Lausanne on September 19 Marguerite Kendal-Bush of Anglo-American origin. Moves to Geneva, rue du Soleil Levant. 1920 - Takes up residence in Bern at Gerechtigkeits gasse, then in 1923 at Junkerngasse. 1923 Works painting in Paris. Exhibits: at the Salon des Indépendants, at the Salon des Tuileries, at the Salon d'Automne. Individual exhibitions under contract at the Gallery CARMINE, 51 rue de Seine in Paris, until the death of Owner with Pascin Astoy, Corbellini, Demeurisse, Osterlind, Piza, Ralli, Tolado. 1924 - Moves to Paris, rue Turgot 1927 Exhibited at Bernheim-Jeune in Paris. 1928 The French State acquires one of his works for the Orangerie Museum. 1929 moves into a private mansion on rue Lauriston where his son Pieter Kendal-Kohl is born. 1930 Exhibited at the Barreiro gallery 30 rue de Seine 1932 Exhibition at the Galerie Charpentier in Paris, regularly until 1936. Exhibited in Japan. 1936 - Divorce from remarried Marguerite Weinberg. Marries Suzanne Spingler and moves to the street Fountain. He leaves Paris and travels through Europe and North Africa. 1937 - Moves to Biot in the Alpes Maritimes. 1939 - Birth of his son Erie Kohl, in Paris on March 31. 1940 - Moves to Villeneuve s/Yonne, then Thorens Haute-Savoie. And returned to Switzerland and stayed there throughout the war. 1942 - settles in Geneva, avenue Léon Gaud. 1943 Exhibited at the Book Guild in Lausanne. 1945 - Upon liberation, he returned to France to Craon, then Villeneuve, 1948 Moves to Brusc, at “Guitoune” near Sanary, takes up pottery after his meeting with Picasso. 1949 - Divorce from Suzanne, married Madame Vve Marguerite Poupon née Sachs who left him a widower on December 22, 1962. He became president of the Society of Painters, Sculptors and Architects of Provence. Exhibition: Galerie Weill, Paris, Étienne Gallery, Toulon. 1952 Elected member of the Var Academy, founded in 1805. Exhibition: Salon de Sanary, Salon de Toulon, Salon de Saint-Tropez, Galerie Chédel, Geneva. 1953 Exhibition at the Guilde du Livre, in Lausanne. 1957 Exhibition Aktuaryus Gallery, Strasbourg. 1960 Exhibition at the Toulon Museum. 1960 - Death of his son Pieter Kendhal-Kohl. 1963 Returns to Switzerland following a bereavement and settles in the Jura. After a stop in St-Cergues Haute-Savoie, he returned permanently to Switzerland, first in Glovelier he executed stained glass windows for the church, then to Soulce, 1964 The Department of the Interior acquires a work for the Confederation. Exhibition: Galerie Bloch, Delémont. 1965 he moved to Neuchâtel and married Jacqueline Rieckel, a descendant of Fritz Courvoisier. Exhibition: Galerie Chédel, Geneva. 1967 Exhibition: Galerie Véandre, Payerne. 1968 Exhibition: Galerie Socrate, Bienne. Exhibition: Kunstsalon Wolfsberg, Zurich. 1969 Exhibition: Galerie Reymond, Neuchâtel. 1976 Borki Langenthal Workshop-Gallery. 1977 Great Wind Dungeon 1983 Exhibition: Galerie Cartier rue haute 7.BIENNE old town. SWITZERLAND from 27.05 to 25.06 presentation Mr.Laurent Borel, 1985 he died near Lake Neuchâtel, Pierre Kohl himself writes that he moved 24 times in his life. He made numerous and frequent trips throughout Europe, to Morocco in 1933 and 1949, to Corsica in 1954. Received in November 1952 at the Académie du Var founded in 1805, he was a friend of Pierre Fontan, Majorai du Félibrige, founder and curator of the collections of Vieux Toulon of Pierre Julian, executor of Frédéric Mistral, of Maurice Sandoz, collector and patron of the Arts, and many other eminent personalities, apart from particularly friendly painters: Bosshard, Clément Darel, Kisling and J. Salvado, friend and model of Picasso for his harlequins. In 1956 he was nominated for the Knight's Cross of the Legion of Honor He has a painting in the Pompidou Centre in Paris " Today in painting as in all things, fashions come and go at a dizzying pace. In this regard KOHL reassures us; he has never been "on the last boat" and has never wanted to Others, whose rapid and often ephemeral rise can sometimes dazzle, are much more "modern", if this word had any meaning in art. And yet, few Swiss painters can be as proud of this as he is. having participated in Paris in the struggle for a freer, less conformist and less naturalist painting waged by the great painters of the School of Paris during the important period for the history of art between the two wars. Kohl was involved in this ferment and was one of the pioneers who shook up official and frozen art. If he did not want, like so many others, to take the step of abstract art in order to be fashionable, except in a few rare attempts such as the stained glass windows he made for the Baptistery of the church of Glovelier in the Jura, there remains no less of those, whether he likes it or not, who made this art possible. From 1920 to 1938 Kohl, in fact, lived in Paris, friendly with Léo Largier, of the Académie Goncourt, with the poets Max Jacob and Léon Paul Fargue, Roland Dorgelès, Bernard Grasset, the famous publisher, André Derain and Pascin. The most famous salons and galleries exhibited his works alongside those of Braque, Chagall, Cocteau, Dignimont, Derain, Foujita, Othon Friesz, Goerg, Gromaire, Kisling, Laprade, Lhote, Lurçat, Pascin, Picasso, Soutine , Utrillo, Suzanne Valadon, Modigliani, Vlaminck... and so on. For fifteen years, in his estate in Brusc near Toulon, he made pottery for eight years (unique pieces), on the advice of his friend Picasso; However, he abandoned this art to devote himself only to painting, drawings and watercolors."
