About the Item
Grand portrait of the legendary Myrrh intent on escaping from her bed once discovered by her father, painted by master Cesare Ghirardi in 1869.
The painting is dated and signed on the bottom left side. It was exhibited at the Promotrice di belle arti in Turin
Legend of Myrrh:
The king of Cyprus Cinira had a beautiful daughter named Myrrh.
Myrrh harbored little devotion to the goddess Aphrodite, and to punish the princess, she caused her to fall madly in love with her father. Myrrh drunk and drugged her father so that she could lie with him for twelve nights in a row.
On the twelfth night, the king's mind cleared and recognized his daughter became angry and chased her to kill her.
Myrrh invoked the help of the gods, and to her rescue Aphrodite herself intervened, who recognized that she had subjected her to an excessively severe punishment, and to help the young woman, turned her into a tree with fragrant resin.
After nine months, the trunk of the tree opened and from its hollow came the beautiful Adonis.
Biography Cesare Ghirardi:
Mondovì (Cuneo) 1841 - Turin 1900
He was a student of A. Gastaldi at the Accademia Albertina in Turin. He illustrated historical-literary subjects and religious themes and was present at the exhibitions of the Promotrice Society of Turin between 1868 and 1896 (1868, Lucretia Waiting for Collatino; 1869, Myrrh; 1870, The Lady of the Camellias; 1891, Lady's Life; 1894, A Conquest of Sister Mary; 1896, Judas Iscariot). He also painted portraits and participated in the 1884 General Exhibition in Turin with the canvas La fanciulla degli Amadei.
The painting has just been restored and is in excellent condition.
