About the Item

Portrait of Françoise-Marie d'Orléans, Duchess of Orleans, 18th-century French school Oil on canvas depicting Françoise-Marie d'Orléans (1677–1749), the legitimized daughter of King Louis XIV of France and Madame de Montespan, married in 1692 to Philip II of Orleans, future Regent of France during the minority of Louis XV. The portrait shows the Duchess's bust, wrapped in a blue-green silk stole and a translucent veil framing her face, in a composition of great elegance and refinement. The serenity of her features, the delicate modeling of her flesh tones, and the subtle sensuality of her attire reflect the aesthetic ideal of French Rococo and the tradition of great court portraitists, such as Jean-Marc Nattier and Hyacinthe Rigaud, who were associated with the royal circle of Versailles. The dark background highlights the luminosity of her face and the folds of the fabric, lending the work decorative strength and nobility. An oil on canvas portrait of a young French courtier, circa 1690. This evocative antique French-school picture has been attributed to the portrait painter Jean-François de Troy (1679-1752). De Troy was famous as a portrait painter of fashionable society women. This is a very attractive late-17th century painting surviving in its original frame and stretcher.
