Against an indeterminate background, the knight's bust is positioned, his face slightly turned to the right. In the lower left corner, the dedication ("To Porfirio / his friend"), the painter's signature, and the date the work was completed ("F/97") appear. As in the rest of Europe, portraiture was a genre that enjoyed great popularity in 19th-century Spain, mainly thanks to social changes (the rise of the upper bourgeoisie, etc.) that influenced aesthetics. Hence the degree of intimacy the painting exudes, different from the "official portraits" preferred by the nobility. ·
