About the Item
A large and bold depiction of the fate of Prometheus, suffering for his gift of fire to the world, was painted by Richard Schwarzkopf, renowned for his paintings and illustrations in what has been called the German Expressionist Art Deco style. Schwarzkopf was a member of the artists' association "Das Junge Rheinland" starting in 1919, until it was dissolved by the National Socialists, and taught at Düsseldorf Art Academy in the 1930s. This painting is a fine example of art that was transitioning from Art Deco into a style we associate with midcentury, and is executed in tempera and watercolor. This piece is matted but not framed, and features an estate stamp on the reverse.
