A masterfully painted scene of a quiet fishing harbor painted by the Dutch artist Benard 'Ben' Viegers. The waning light casts dappled shadows on the water surrounding the small fishing boats, their gear carefully stowed in preparation for morning's sail. Small homes dot the harbors shore, a sight repeated countless times throughout The Netherlands. Ben Viegers was born on 17 December 1886 in The Hague. His father Piet was a coachman, but his grandfather was coachbuilder and the first inspiration source for the young Viegers. In the workshop of his grandfather Hulzing, he learned drawing, paint mixing/blending and decorating. After elementary school, he became an apprentice in the coach workshop. The artist Ben Viegers was self-taught, there is no proof that he ever registered for an official education/academy to develop his artistic talents. In the first years, he was coached and guided by his friend Charles (Carel Bernardus) Dankmeijer (1861-1923). As a starting professional painter, Viegers had a contract with The Hague art-gallery Koch that ensured him a guaranteed monthly income. A lot of his early work was mainly bought by tourists and visitor from the abroad. He is mainly inspired by the "Veluwe" (a Dutch region with forests and farmland) and the villages around the Zuiderzee. As a real 'plein-airist' he traveled a lot to paint in plein-air, in the beginning by bike and train later on a Harley Davidson 3-seat. With a happy and bright palet, Viegers paints city-scapes, landscapes, and farm-yards on canvas, wood or board. Viegers made only one trip abroad together with his friend Henk van Leeuwen and Jaap Hiddink, to Brittany and Normandy (Concarneau). He died in 1957. Canvas image is 15 1/8 by 18 7/8 inches.
