Italian 17th Century Oil on Canvas of Saint Matthew of Agrigento This striking oil on canvas, executed in Italy in the 17th century, depicts San Matteo di Agrigento (St. Matthew of Agrigento), a revered Sicilian bishop and hermit. The saint is shown barefoot, clothed in the humble habit of his order, with his characteristic attributes: a small chapel symbolizing his devotion to the monastic life, and the cross, emblem of his faith and sacrifice. His solemn gaze and delicate hand gesture convey both the austerity and spiritual intensity of his vocation, qualities which resonated deeply within the Counter-Reformation era. The composition, sober yet deeply expressive, reflects the devotional art of southern Italy in the Baroque period, where emphasis on spirituality and inward contemplation was favored over opulence.
