About the Item

Portrait of Maria Theresa of Austria, Queen Consort of France, 17th Century Oil on canvas, European School, ca. 1660–1680, late 17th century Oil on canvas depicting Maria Theresa of Austria (1638–1683), queen consort of France by her marriage to Louis XIV. The sovereign is shown bust-length, dressed in a red mantle and draped silver dress, held together with a blue ribbon, following the French court fashion of the second half of the 17th century. Her serene face and updo reflect the model of Baroque court portraits from the Versailles era. This work is from the European school (probably French or Spanish), dating from around 1660–1680, and preserves fine pictorial quality in the modeling of the face and clothing. Framed in a gilt frame with 19th-century rocaille plant decoration, which enhances the work's presence. Accompanied by a high-period certificate confirming its authenticity as a 17th-century work. 86cm x 68cm 103.5cm x 86cm Good condition

An oil on canvas portrait of a young French courtier, circa 1690. This evocative antique French-school picture has been attributed to the portrait painter Jean-François de Troy (1679-1752). De Troy was famous as a portrait painter of fashionable society women. This is a very attractive late-17th century painting surviving in its original frame and stretcher.
