About the Item

A beautiful, engaging, original, and quite rare work of art by American artist Robert Crowder (1911-2010). Crowder lived in Japan in the 1930s (until he was abruptly expelled in 1943 after spending two years in a prisoner-of-war camp during WW II). During his stay there he studied under the master painter Shunko Mochizuki who taught him Nihonga - the traditional Japanese style painting of the Meiji period. This large five-panel painting in the Japanese Nihonga style features a serene pastoral landscape fauna scene (perhaps Italian or somewhere else in Europe) with various figures in the foreground, a vast lake, and a city/townscape in the background. Crowder's work often celebrated his love and appreciation for nature and his concern over the disappearing flora and fauna. This unique work is meticulously hand painted and beautifully colored. The screen is hand signed in ink by the artist. Crowder's work is becoming harder to find as the appreciation for his artistry and demand for his work has grown. This piece is quite rare as it is the only work of his we have seen that features a subject matter other than his Japanese-themed works. This piece would clearly stand out in any setting and is sure to give aesthetic pleasure for years to come. Each hand painted panel is framed separately in a gold-painted wooden frame. Approximate extended dimensions: 81.5" high, 163.75" wide, 1" deep. Each panel: 81.5" x 32.75".
