About the Item

A very early and expansive abstract impressionist or surrealist oil painting by listed California artist and educator Ron Ownbey (b. 1938) in original custom frame. An impressively sized and engaging early example of Ownbey’s distinctive organic aesthetic, rendered in the nature-inspired limited color palette that he would revisit throughout the 1960s. Retains a partial label on back that indicates the piece is from his first end-of-year student exhibition at the Otis Art Institute in 1962, from where he would graduate with an MFA in 1965. Ownbey started painting at the age of 14 on his family’s ranch in California. After military service, he attended Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, which was followed by 35 years of teaching art at Mt. San Antonio College, California. During that time, he established and maintained a passionate and prolific career as a professional artist who continues to evolve and impress to this day. This passage from Ownbey’s artist statement on his website does a fantastic job of providing context for this piece, and shows that he’s stayed remarkably true to his singular artistic vision for more than 60 years: “The serenity, chaos, complexity and vastness of the universe and our world and the variety of life forms that nature and God have created feed into my mind. My work is very organic, often plant like, of faces and the inner and outer appearance of the human body and animals, and the microscopic close-up of other living organisms. My work has a strong symbolic and surrealistic tone, monochromatic at times but usually with strong shapes, color and value contrasts.” Canvas floats in original custom frame made by the artist, with the stretcher bearing a personalized “Ronald B. Wear consistent with age and use. Art is in very good vintage condition, with some superficial marks and stretcher lines in a couple places. Painted frame presents fine with mostly light wear, marks, nicks, and scuffs throughout.
