Striking in its use of bold color -- black, white and sky blue -- and strong geometric shapes -- the circle, segmented circle and diagonal line -- this painting of a sailor and soldier marching side by side, with bayonets aloft, shows the clear influence of Art Deco and Constructivism. This painting may have constituted a costume design for a ballet or opera production in Russia, and the artist signed the piece with his initials: AK or AX in Cyrillic script. The medium is gouache on paper. (Dimensions include matte and frame; the visible image is 13.5" high by 11.5" wide.)
