Samuel David Colkett (1806-1863) A Norfolk landscape Oil on canvas. Size: 53 x 63cm original frame. Samuel David Colkett was born in 1806 in Norwich and was christened on 2 March at St. Stephen's Church, the son of William Samuel Colkett and Susannah Sharp. Between 1822 and 1833 he exhibited regularly in both Norwich and London. Between 1828 and 1836 he worked in London, before returning to Norwich to set up as a drawing master and an art restorer. In 1844 he moved to Great Yarmouth, and then to Cambridge in 1854. He worked as a Landscape painter in oil and watercolour and as an engraver. He was a pupil of James Stark (1794-1859), who was in turn a pupil of John Crome, one of the most influential artists of the Norwich School. Unlike many of the artists associated with the Norwich School, Colkett was not a member of the Norwich Society of Artists, established by Crome in 1803. From 1828 Colkett lived and worked in London, exhibiting at the R.A (in 1830 and 1831) as well as the British Institute, where he exhibited 30 works. He returned to Norwich in 1836 where he worked as a dealer, restorer and drawing master. In 1843 Colkett moved to Yarmouth. He lived and worked in Cambridge from 1853 until his death in 1863. His style closely follows that of his tutor, James Stark. There are very close similarities in the landscapes of pupil and tutor. Stark was a pupil of John Crome, who was the main figure in the Norwich School. The rustic scene, with its figure set in a landscape as well as the way that Colkett represents the trees using dots of paint to create the effect of the foliage reflect Dutch seventeenth-century landscapes of artists such as Hobbema 1638-1700. John Crome was particularly interested in Dutch landscapes and it would seem that this interest came down to Colkett via his master James Stark. The Norwich School is a name applied to a group of Landscape painters working in the early nineteenth century who were associated with the Norwich Society of Fine Arts, established by John Crome (1768-1821) in 1803. The society was founded with the intention of "an Enquiry into the Rise, Progress and present state of Painting, Architecture and Sculpture, with a view to point out the Best Methods of Study to attain the Greater Perfection in these Arts." It included both professional and amateur artists. The society held exhibitions annually in Norwich from 1805-1825 and then from 1828-1833. The Norwich School was the first self-sustaining Provincial artistic Community in Britain. Its evolution was due to the relative insularity of both Norfolk merchants and gentry, who provided patronage through purchasing works as wells as employing many of the artists associated with the Norwich School as drawing masters for their wives and daughters. The artistic style of each artist within the Norwich School is often very different. For example the work of the two main figures in the Norwich School, John Crome (1768-1821) and John Sell Cotman (1782-1842) are very different. Crome's paintings, mainly produced in oil, reflect the influence of the Dutch 17th century landscapes, whilst Cotman employs a more elegant topographical approach, often through the medium of watercolor. The Norwich School artists were united through their depiction of local landscape rather than the employment of a particular style. Crome was perhaps one of the most influential members of the school. This can be seen particularly in the work of his pupils George Vincent (1796-1832) and James Stark (1794- 1859). Colkett exhibited in London at the Royal Academy and the British Institution in the early 19th century. Paintings of his can be seen today in the Norwich and Nottingham galleries, Victoria Albert Museum, London.
