About the Item

This extraordinarily rare and important painting, for the cover of the December, 1952 issue of "American Manhood" magazine, depicts a fallen scuba diver, pinned down by the wreckage of a plane or ship, being rescued by another diver. The painting is a superb example of narrative illustration art that attests to the 1950s interest in fantasy, body-building and of course the recent World War. It was "dedicated to the underwater demolition squads of the United States Navy whose heroic labours cleared the Invasion Beaches for the Armies of Democracy." The painter was Peter Poulton, who did a number of covers for fantasy, adventure and science fiction magazines starting in the 1930s, including "Future Science Fiction," "Startling Stories" and "Mr. America." The painting is accompanied by an original copy of "American Manhood" magazine featuring this image on the cover. The painting is oil on canvas board.

Clearly demonstrating his love for the culture and sensuality of his adopted Hawaii, and brilliantly executed, Robert Lee Eskridge's "Stone Fishing" is a landmark in Art Deco printmaking. Although his work often shows the influence of Cubism and abstract art, Eskridge’s paintings and prints also capture the exoticism and sensuality of his subjects.
