Scuola emiliana, XVII secolo Rebecca al pozzo Olio su tela, cm 76 x 58 Giunta la morte della consorte Sara, Abramo decide di cercare moglie al figlio Isacco. Pertanto, manda il suo servo Eliezer in Mesopotamia, la loro terra di origine, in cerca di una giovane da dargli in sposa che avesse le loro stesse radici. Durante una sosta al pozzo della città di Arran, Eliezer incontra una giovane di nome Rebecca che non esita ad offrirgli acqua dalla sua anfora. Il servo di Abramo capisce che quella è la fanciulla mandata dal Signore e offre a lei dei gioielli come pegno del matrimonio con Isacco. Il dipinto in esame inscena il racconto biblico (Genesi 22,23) all’ombra delle fronde di un albero. Collocata al centro della tela è dunque Rebecca, abbigliata con una lunga veste azzurra e da un drappo color malva, mentre poggia la sua anfora sul bordo del pozzo. In secondo piano comprare un’altra donna che assiste incuriosita alla scena, indugiando probabilmente su Eliazer che non figura però nel dipinto. Le movenze eleganti della figura con la testa delicatamente piegata, la resa degli incarnati, la setosità del colore, la preziosità della gamma cromatica rendono plausibile collocare il dipinto nell'ambito della pittura emiliana.
