About the Item

Picture made in oil technique on canvas, applied to a cardboard box. It was created before 1840. Backed. Marine theme landscape. Presents a sailboat when entering a port. An unconfirmed signature of an English landscape painter and portraitist Thomas Gainsborough was found in the painting. This signature would indicate that the painting was created before 1840 (1727-1788 years of the artist's life), but it is not confirmed. Condition after conservation. In the lower right corner of the image there is a mark that looks like a signature, but it is not legible. A signature can be found under the cardboard. One third of the image field is represented by a rough sea that connects to the sky on the horizon. In the center of the composition there are sailboats with human figures carried by the waves. The artist devoted a lot of attention to the realistic representation of the sea and the colors of water - from deep pomegranate, through blues to green. The largest part of the canvas is occupied by a study of the sky, beautiful, seemingly serene, but with a zone of overlapping clouds. Well visible brush duct. Dynamic composition. The picture framed in a classic frame, richly decorated with an ornament consisting of bay leaves, pearls, zigzags. 378/5000 Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) is a well-known English landscape painter and portraitist. He was one of the initiators of the 18th century English landscape school. An important feature of his work was observation of nature, which is why he did not create strictly according to the principles taught at artistic academies and universally required from artists. The painting has been approved by the western auction house.
