About the Item
A beautiful oil on canvas portrait, presented in a contemporary carved wooden frame gilded with gold leaf. A note on the back of the painting states that the work depicts the philanthropist Johann Caspar Schweirer, born in Zurich and died in Paris in 1811, who was the adoptive father of the Swiss-French painter Anna Barbara Bansi (1777-1863). In the portrait, Schweirer is depicted wearing typical mid-18th-century clothing and hairstyle: a white wig, a closed coat, and a white jacket with a fabric front. His crossed hands and shifty, almost pensive gaze contribute to the realistic nature of the painting, highlighting a skillful use of chiaroscuro and great pictorial skill. As indicated by the plaque on the front of the painting, the work is attributed to the artist J.H.W. Tischbein (1751-1829), a renowned German painter and engraver, was famous for his historical paintings, mythological subjects, and portraits, including those of his friend Goethe. For this reason, it is a painting of great historical uniqueness, dating back to around the second half of the 18th century.
