About the Item

Sepia Watercolour Landscape by Alexei Hanzen (Russian, 1876–1937) Russia, Early 20th Century A moody and atmospheric sepia watercolour landscape by Russian artist Alexei Hanzen, depicting a solitary windmill on a moor. The work is signed lower left "A. Hanzen" and is characteristic of Hanzen’s refined treatment of rural and maritime subjects. Executed in subtle washes of sepia ink and watercolour, the composition displays a lightness of touch and a sensitive rendering of landscape. Housed in its original early 20th-century wide frame, finely decorated with ivory inlay, and set behind glass. Details Artist: Alexei Vasilievich Hanzen (1876–1937) Medium: Watercolour on paper Technique: Sepia wash Signed: Lower left Frame: Original early 20th-century frame with ivory inlay Dimensions (framed): 61.5 cm high x 55.5 cm wide Condition: Painting in good condition with age-appropriate toning. The frame shows some minor wear and areas of repair to the inlay. Ready to hang. Alexei Hanzen, grandson of renowned marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky, trained in Berlin, Dresden, and Paris, and exhibited widely across Europe and the United States. After the Russian Revolution, he settled in Dubrovnik, Croatia, where he continued painting until his death in 1937. His work is represented in the Odessa Art Museum, the Feodosia Art Gallery, and various European royal collections. A fine and collectable work by a noted Russian émigré artist, representing the lyrical naturalism for which Hanzen is admired.
