About the Item

A wonderful set of blue and red Murano glass vases by Cenedese glass, Italy, circa 1990s and an informal abstract modernist oil painting signed by German artist Walter Wohlschlegel (1907-1999). Painted on hardboard, Wohlschlegel is painting on the rough textured surface of the hardboard and using this to his advantage - creating an interesting color play, most notably, where the thinned bright red overlays the darker maroon red and bright cobalt blue lines - running into and filling the grooves of the open surface. Wohlschlegel painted from the 1930s right up until the late 1990s with only a short break to serve as a soldier in Greece during the Second World War. Two years after his return he moved to settle in Freiburg in south west Germany, close to the French boarder. During this time he moved to the informal style as seen here. This painting is signed but not dated. Stylistically, it may well have been painted between the period 1960-1970 as, in the late 1960s through to the 1970s Wohlschlegel started to paint in a style somewhere between the movements of Pop Art and color field painting.
