About the Item
Southern Italian View of a Town
Attributed to Salvatore Balsamo (Naples, 1894–1922)
Late 19th / Early 20th Century
A finely executed Southern Italian town view attributed to Salvatore Balsamo, an Italian painter active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Though Balsamo died young and documentation of his career remains limited, he left a notable body of work aligning him with the broader circle of Neapolitan painters of his generation. Born and raised in Naples, he studied under Vincenzo Irolli and Giuseppe Casciaro, both influential figures whose teachings shaped his confident handling of color and atmospheric light.
Balsamo devoted his practice primarily to landscapes, views of southern Italian towns, as well as portraits and interior scenes. The present painting, though bearing only partial remnants of a signature on the lower left—necessitating its attribution rather than firm authentication—exhibits the vigorous brushwork, spontaneous stroke, and lively tonal contrasts characteristic of his recognized works. These qualities strongly support the attribution.
