About the Item

An early 20th century American painting by Susan Ricker Knox, featuring the artist on horseback stylishly attired in a squash blossom necklace and chimayo vest. Born in Portsmouth, Maine in 1874, Knox studied at Drexel University and the Cooper Union Art School in New York under Howard Pyle, Clifford Grayson and Douglas Volk. By 1913 she had a studio in NYC at the National Arts Club and was highly sought after for her portrait work. Beginning in the 1920s she began spending winters in Arizona and summers in York, ME and until the mid 1930s also traveled widely throughout the Southwest, becoming renowned for her sensitive portraits of Native Americans. An important work titled, In Salt River Valley, which depicted Pima Indians on their Arizona reservation was exhibited in 1932 at the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors.
