One a kind and a museum work of art oil on canvas by Anselmo Miguel Nieto depicting two women, mother and daughter, in a very natural, affectionate attitude. Behind them, a landscape that competes in prominence with those portrayed. It was in the portrait genre that the painter shone above all others, but it is his portraits of women that made him an exceptional painter. His style is characterized by a combination of realism and symbolism, with a strong influence from the academicism and modernism of his time. Both are depicted in great detail and with almost photographic realism, which shows that behind the work there is a very detailed study by the painter, who thus shows himself to be a master of drawing. The seated woman has a serene and confident expression, while the young woman, who appears standing, has a softer expression. Their dresses, accessories and hairstyles are meticulously painted, and reflect the fashion of the time. Mother and daughter hold hands and look directly at the viewer in an intense and slightly mysterious way, typical of the symbolist movement. However, despite the careful anatomical study, this very precise drawing is softened when it comes to giving life to the skin of the protagonists, with a looser and vaporous brushstroke, although it still does not lose detail. It is precisely this brushstroke that is maintained in the landscape in the background, which occupies a large part of the painting. The colour palette is rich and harmonious. The warm tones of the women's skin contrast with the cooler tones that can be seen in the landscape, creating a visual balance. The play of light and shadow creates volume and depth in the figures and the surroundings, a soft light that provides a serene atmosphere. As for the composition, as is usual with the author, the figures are placed in the foreground, capturing the viewer's attention. In this way, the landscape acts as a natural frame, although it competes for prominence with the women due to its majesty. The mountains, the valley, the river and the bridge are painted with a precision that shows his ability to capture nature, despite his blurred technique. The vegetation and rock formations are represented with textures that suggest their touch and shape. At the bottom of the mountains, which are placed symmetrically on the sides, is the valley that extends into the distance, covered with vegetation. The bridge, as an architectural element, connects the two parts of the landscape. Various trees and bushes frame the scene. The vegetation seems to be typical of a temperate region, with cypresses and other plants common in mountainous areas. The sky is partly cloudy, with clouds adding drama to the scene. The light is soft, suggesting it could be sunrise or sunset. The painting shows a harmony between the figures and the landscape. The integration of natural elements with human figures is a distinctive characteristic of our author, creating a work that is both a portrait and a landscape, a work that is equally intimate and majestic. His ability to combine detailed realism with harmonious composition and a skillful use of color and light to capture both the human essence and natural beauty is also noteworthy. In the works of Anselmo Miguel Nieto, the female figures were often portraits of people from their environment, such as family members, friends, or commissioners, or notable people of the time. More about the artist… Anselmo Miguel Nieto was one of the most important Spanish portrait painters of the 20th century and, in general, of the history of painting in our country. He lived through the moment of development and apogee of the Spanish modernist movement, centered in Catalonia; He associated with the cultural elite of the time, names as well known as Romero de Torres, Zuloaga, Ricardo Baroja, Valle-Inclán… and he represented many of them in his portraits, but his muses or favourite models were women, many of them well-known at the time, dancers, actresses… He thus became the painter par excellence of women, beautiful and sensual. His female nudes hardly find any competition in Spanish and international painting. Various causes are attributed to the lack of knowledge or neglect of his painting, among them the painter's constant refusal to participate in official competitions, since his only concern was the purity and perfection of his art, although it must also be taken into account that the type of painting to which he dedicated himself, so praised and flattered at the beginning of the century, soon lost popularity in favour of a more modern art, following the wake of what was developing in the rest of Europe, in search of a in search of a cultural advancement that the country was lacking after the post-war period and the beginning of the dictatorship. However, his memory and the appreciation of his work has been recovered thanks to various studies, exhibitions and tributes. Among them, the monograph “Anselmo Miguel Nieto, life and painting”, carried out by José Carlos Brasas Egido and published in 1981 by the Simancas Cultural Institution, under the sponsorship of the Valladolid Provincial Council.
