About the Item

Boldly conceived and executed, this original maquette for a proposed Saturday Evening Post cover by Larry Segall depicts a sailor at the helm of a ship, his hands on the wheel and his course guided by a compass housed in the ship's binnacle. Painted on the eve of America's entrance into World War II, this piece anticipates the enormous role of America's navy in the war to come. The sailor's face is full of light and shadow, reminiscent of the film noirs that were emerging in Hollywood, adding to the drama of the scene. At the bottom of the painting, Segall pasted in a reference to an anticipated story for this issue of the Post -- "Sundown" by Barré Lyndon -- which was published in 1941. Evidently this cover art was never used by the Post. The artist designed a poster for Pan American Airlines, but his career as an illustration artist is not well documented. The painting is gouache on artist board.
