This exquisite still life exemplifies the timeless elegance of Flemish tradition, masterfully reinterpreted with a contemporary sensibility. On a rustic olive-toned wooden table rests a golden mustard ceramic bowl, its soft, undulating rim lending a sculptural presence. Inside, a cluster of ripe plums glows with velvety purple and golden hues, their delicate skin catching the light with almost photographic precision. A few more plums are scattered around the bowl, arranged with effortless balance, while the deep, uninterrupted black background heightens the drama and draws the viewer’s gaze entirely to the subject.
Born in Niel, Belgium in 1964, Stefaan Eyckmans is the son of a painter and graphic artist, introduced to the tools of the craft from an early age. Deeply influenced by the Flemish Primitives, the 17th-century still life masters, and the Antwerp hyperrealist movement led by Willem Dolphyn, Eyckmans has developed a style that marries impeccable realism with poetic restraint. His command of light, texture, and composition results in works that are at once precise, serene, and enduring.
