About the Item
Important both historically and artistically, this painting by Lyman Anderson of a railroad engineer feeding the engine with a fresh supply of coal was commissioned by the Coca Cola Company for an important 1940s educational campaign to celebrate industry in America. Started during World War II and continuing through the end of the 1940s, Coca Cola produced an array of large, color posters -- entitled "Our America" ---- that were designed for display in school classrooms. This painting was executed for one of several vignettes for the "Uses of Coal" poster, and was entitled "Railroad Use." The painting is gouache and watercolor on heavy paper and retains an old label for Dewart Gallery in Savannah, now defunct. Dimensions include the matte; visible painting is 4 3/8 inches high by 5 inches wide.

"Pipe Fitters", 1951 Paean to the Working Man by Gere, Wisconsin Painter
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Although this painting dates to 1951, a few years after the Works Progress Administration (WPA) period ended in the 1940s, this tight composition of two pipe fitters doing their work in a cramped space is very much akin to America's Depression-era murals that celebrated the American worker. The painter was Byron Gere...
