About the Item
Signed acrylic on canvas dated '92 by listed artist Raul Torres Rojas, born 1924. Marked in the back 'John - 2 Retraro - Acrilico - Raul Torres Rojas 1992'. A cubist portrait in vibrant purple, peach and brown hues, depicts John Lennon with a guitar in front and Yoko Ono in the background. Signed and dated in the lower right corner, the signature reads Torres Rojas. Set in a richly carved gilt wooden frame.
Raúl Torres Rojas was born in a small farm in the Province of La Pampa, Argentina. At a young age he acquired a solid formation in drawing and painting, from teachers such as Araceli Vázquez Málaga and Hector Cartier, noted for their technical knowledge.
He moved to Mar del Plata city in 1951, and decided to make a living from his art. Living by the sea, looking at the wide Atlantic beaches, the fishing boats and the magnificent winter skies, he began to develop his craft and refine his aesthetic, after which followed countless paintings, shows, contests and prizes.
In the 70's he became a founding member of the Mar del Plata's Fine Arts Association where he would encourage and support many young painters. After several years his focus returned to his work, pausing for almost two years when his wife passed in 1987.
In 1989 he move back to Buenos Aires, the city of his youth. A year later he married again, and began his relationship with the firm Cambridge, Christner and Weiss, who would introduce his work to the US market.
From 1973 Torres Rojas has presented approximately 60 individual shows, as well as a number of joint shows, in Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and U.S.A., in the galleries "Palatina", "América" and "Pozzi" of Buenos Aires, "Guignard" and "Bolsa de Arte" of Porto Alegre (Brazil), "Portal" of Sao Paulo (Brazil), "Frank J. Oehlschlaeger" and "Chasen Gallery" of Sarasota (U.S.A.).
