Dated 1936, this striking self-portrait of a young man, seen from three vantage points, is painted with warm colors and a bold impasto technique that makes the faces come alive. The man is wearing an artist smock, and his expressive mouth and wavy shock of dark hair create a handsome image. The central figure has a slight smile, but the two other faces -- looking over his shoulders -- are more impassive. The painting is signed J. S. Fontaine. The medium is oil on wood panel.
