Two Milanese School, Oil on Board Paintings, 17th Century representing the Greek Philosopher Diogenes and Renowned Mathematician Archimedes; in 19th century gilt frames. 18 inches by 22 inches; (45.7cm by 55.9cm) cf. Diogenes? (c.412-323 BC) Born in Turkey, Diogenes studied in Athens, he was eccentric, sometimes called the founder of the Athenian Cynic school he became an ascet, eating plainly, dressed in shredded clothes, and sleeping in the streets. Diogenes often visited a famous prostitute named Lais and is purported to have said ", the difference between what costs money and what does not cost anything one can see at the nearest brothel". Archimedes? (c.287-212 BC) Born in Syracuse, and educated in Alexandria, Archimedes is often universally thought of as the most important mathematician and inventor of the ancient world. He is best known for his phrase "Eureka"! (I found it! ) which he is said to have exclaimed upon finding the solution to measuring the weight of an object under varied conditions, and for his invention of what we know as the "Archimedes screw".
