About the Item
Serving, perhaps, as a commentary on the futility and horror of war, this allegorical painting of "Two Philosophers" was made by Arthur Kampf in 1948-49, shortly after the end of World War II and toward the end of his long life. Kampf was known for his historical and allegorical paintings, including a large scene showing a group of nude soldiers surprised by an attack, quickly dressing to go to battle. This scene is peaceful and quiet, but if suggests that seasoned academics are talking of weighty matters. Kampf was President of the Royal Academy of Arts and later, from 1915 to 1925, he was director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. This painting was executed on Masonite, and is signed in the lower righthand corner.
