About the Item
Voluptuous in its approach to scene and palette, this sumptuous portrait of two women, lounging side by side amongst pillows and fabrics in satin and silk, was painted by Rudolph Schabelitz. It is not known who these women were, but they are clearly dear friends, and relish their gorgeous setting, sporting dresses and fashionable hairdos befitting ladies of high rank. The artist was a New Yorker through-and-through, having been born in Staten Island, studied at the Art Students League, and active in the Salmagundi Club near Union Square. He illustrated many books and magazines in the 1910s, 20s and 30s, including advertisements for Garford automobiles and a series of mystery novels such as "Murder Draws a Line," some of which he co-wrote. The painting is oil on canvas, and is signed in the lower righthand corner. It was recently framed.

- Condition:Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Overall very good, with a scattering of small losses, especially along the edge where they will be hidden once framed. The reverse shows three patches, though an inspection of the front does not show any tears or punctures.
