About the Item

JOHN BATTISTA PAGGI, Bottega (Genoa, 1554 - 1627) Venus and Love Oil on canvas, 99 × 83 cm Inside an environment shrouded completely in darkness are depicted in the foreground Venus, in profile and half-length, in the act of embracing and kissing her son Cupid. The two deities, traditionally associated from the classical Greco-Roman era with the theme of Love, they are modeled with a grazing light "by the light of night." which admirably highlights the contrasts between light and shadow on the meats, highlighting, at the same time, the tender affectionate relationship between mother and child, well detectable in gestural and expressive mimicry of the same characters. To give a courtly and refined tone to the illustrated scene, the author of the work pays great attention, as well as than to the elegant definition of the figures, to the contour elements, particularly to the black and gold satin pillow with an elaborate fringed tassel and the jewels that encircle the waist and hair of Venus made of gold with precious stones and pearls. Pure gold gilded frame Accompanying the opinion piece by Dr. Sandro Bellesi.

Furniture was produced, mainly in the Veneto, with a typically Baroque formal layout, but with more minute proportions and more elegant decorative modules typical of Rococo furniture that did not contrast with the old Baroque scenographic furniture. This style, which spread throughout the peninsula, was called Italian Baroque. Venice, already renowned for its painted and lacquered furniture, was the center of the development of this style, where it lasted well beyond the mid-eighteenth century. In addition to the Veneto, furniture in this style was built by the Genoese cabinetmakers heirs of Anton Maria Maragliano (1664 - 1739) and in Piedmont, where the productions of Luigi Prinotto (1706 - 1790) and Pietro Piffetti...
