About the Item

Delicate gouache study by the Danish painter and designer Vilhelm Bjerke Petersen (1909–1957), depicting a stylized vase form conceived for the Swedish porcelain manufacturer Rörstrand during the 1950s. Executed in gouache on paper, the work reveals Bjerke Petersen’s distinctive fusion of Surrealist abstraction and Scandinavian modernism — a visual language that balances organic symbolism with geometric order. The drawing exemplifies his postwar exploration of applied art and industrial form, where sculptural ceramics became an extension of his painterly and theoretical practice. The composition — simultaneously architectural and sensuous — reflects his enduring interest in the relationship between form, color, and archetype, ideas rooted in his studies at the Bauhaus under Kandinsky and Klee in the early 1930s. Bjerke Petersen’s later collaborations with Rörstrand and Gustavsberg show how avant-garde principles could be translated into everyday Nordic design. Provenance: From the family of the artist’s wife, Eva-Lisa Lennartsson. Dimensions: – Without frame: 28 × 18 cm – With frame: 38 × 30 cm Medium: Gouache on paper Origin: Sweden / Denmark, circa 1950s A rare and intimate insight into the process of one of Scandinavia’s most intellectually rigorous modernists — bridging the worlds of art, theory, and design.

By Giorgio Morandi, Ramon Prats
Located in New Windsor, NY
Ramon Prats (1928-2003) vase and jug still life oil paint on masonite. Circa 1971. Signed and dated lower right, Prats, '71. A peaceful rendering and reminiscent of Morandi's solitary still life paintings. Prats' stippling effect with the brush or palette knife has created a beautifully tactile and textured painting. Light and dark contrast of the violet cylinder next to the curvaceous jug. A wonderful piece. the framing treatment consists of a simple flat black wood profile molding. The piece is in good overall condition with minor losses around the corners and edges of the work. No other major paint losses. No visible crazing, water damage or restorations. Some scuffs, dings and losses to the black frame. Wear consistent with age. Approximate overall dimensions with frame are 1.5" deep x 16" wide x 24.75" high. The approximate measurements of the actual work on masonite are 15.63" wide x 24.25" high.
