About the Item

The Virgin in the Chair (Madonna della sedia) was painted by Raphael in 1513-1514, during his Roman period. It represents Mary, holding the Child Jesus in her arms, and John the Baptist who looks at them with devotion. Its title is due to the presence on the left of an upright of the back of a chair which would refer to papal furniture, suggesting that it was Pope Leo X himself who commissioned this painting. The painting is currently on display in the Saturn Room of the Palatine Gallery of the Pitti Palace, Florence. Stolen by the Napoleonic troops in 1799, it was hung during a few years in the painting gallery of the Château de Malmaison at the request of Joséphine Bonaparte. This is Raphael's most humanistic form of the Madonna, an incarnation of a realistic mother and child, representing human motherhood. This is the reason why, in the XIX’s Century it was very popular to offer a copy of this painting to newlyweds to bring good luck to their union. Our unique and beautiful copy of Raphael’s painting, dating from the XIX’s century, is an oil on copper in a gilded wooden frame with round view. The frame is itself a piece of art.
