About the Item
This is a large (54" x 91" framed) and decorative painting on masonite by Emil Hagstrom. Our research shows there is a Swedish artist by that name (1892-1982). Although we are not sure this is the Emil Hagstrom that painted this work, the dates do align. Signed lower right, Emil Hagstrom Copy, C.W. (sic) Russell.
We believe this work is from the 1930s, although it could be earlier. It's a copy of 'Capturing the Grizzly' by Charles Marion (C.M.) Russell which was painted in 1901. The painting offered is on fiberboard that was produced by the Upson Company from 1910-1935.
The painting is in original condition. It has some wear and light scratches, but no major paint loss or damage to the fiberboard. We believe the frame is also original and it is also in nice vintage condition with wear consistent with the age. Framed the work measures 54" x 91". Unframed the painting is roughly 48" x 85". (The frame is included.)
This painting would be an impressive statement in a western-style interior or lodge. It's scale would also lend itself to a commercial application like a restaurant or hotel. This work is big and dramatic and although it has not been cleaned or restored, it displays beautifully and has a wonderful vintage feel that can't be replicated.
