About the Item
Perhaps the loveliest portrait we have ever offered, this painting of a young woman with golden hair, her face captured in soft tones of rose and ivory, was painted by Gerald Leake. The Impressionist foreground and backdrop for the figure echo the colors of her hair, and her dress is a lovely, deep purple. The artist was born in England, immigrating to America in the early 20th century, and developing an enviable reputation for his allegorical scenes, portraits and illustration art, painted from his studios in New York and the Florida Keys. In fact, during the winter months, Leake taught in Key West where he held classes in Ernest Hemingway's house, now a major tourist destination. He painted for Navy posters during World War I, and illustrated for an array of magazines including Pictorial Review, Read on Home and Life. Leake exhibited at the Salmagundi Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Royal Academy in London, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Academy of Design. This painting is oil on canvas. Dimensions include frame.
