About the Item
This is a lacquerware craftsman's workbench believed to have been actually used in Fukushima Prefecture and other areas in the Tohoku region between 1945 and 1960. This box-shaped stand embodies the history of handcraftsmanship that has been cultivated over time.
The wooden body of the stand shows evidence of years of lacquer handling, especially on the top panel, which shows layers of lacquer deposited during the preparation and application process, giving it a thick, glossy black appearance. The overlapping traces of the lacquer coating give the piece a timeless and fascinating art piece-like presence, with the depth of an abstract painting.
The lid is removable and can be hung on the wall as a single piece of art, or used as a display stand in its box form. It can be combined with your favorite objects, ceramics, books, etc., to add depth and story to your space.
There are countless scratches and splashes of lacquer on the outside, but these are all traces of “craftsman's time”. It has a quiet and powerful beauty that cannot be found in new pieces. There is a drawer with a partition inside, which stirs the imagination as to what kind of tools were stored in it at that time.
As a one-of-a-kind item, it can create a very unique and artistic space. It is recommended not only as vintage furniture but also as a work of art.
Size: 43.5 cm (width) X 33 cm (depth) X 18.5 cm (height)

[We are a specialized team dealing in antiques and vintage items, comprised of stores based on three distinct brands. While focusing on Japanese items, we also offer a carefully curated selection of attractive goods from around the world—each evoking the culture and history of its country of origin.
Unlike the traditional Japanese antique furniture and art that have been appreciated overseas until now, we shine a light on the tools and furniture that were used for many years in ordinary Japanese homes and farmhouses. These objects have gained a unique charm over time, their beauty deepened by the history accumulated through daily life. In today’s world, however, many of these precious items are discarded during home demolitions. We are committed to reassessing their value and passing them on to future generations.
Drawing from our extensive experience—having seen tens of thousands of items through direct purchases, markets, and auction houses—we carefully select and present only the most captivating pieces. This is something made possible only through the years of knowledge and expertise we have cultivated.
Rather than focusing on the widely known facets of Japanese art and culture, we highlight the subtle beauty born from the everyday life of common people. It is this rediscovered beauty, steeped in history, that we strive to share with the world.]

Japanese Antique Wooden Box 1860s-1920s / Sofa Table Storage Box Wabisabi
Located in Chōsei District Nagara, JP
This is an old Japanese wooden box, crafted in the Meiji to Taishō period (1860s–1920s). Despite its long history, it retains a quiet and compelling presence. The box is made from traditional sugi (Japanese cedar), whose soft grain and gentle texture reflect the depth and warmth of its age.
The form is strikingly minimal—its design is completely free of unnecessary elements. Although it is simply a box, the composition of clean lines and planes gives it a subtle tension and understated beauty. It carries the precision and warmth of handcraft, something that cannot be replicated by industrial production.
One particularly captivating feature is the visible trace of careful repairs made over many years. A knot hole on the side was thoughtfully patched with black washi paper, a practical repair that, over time, has become an expressive and almost artistic detail. In this small gesture, one can sense the quiet presence of Japanese aesthetic sensibilities.
The top and sides bear gentle wear and abrasion accumulated over decades. Rather than damage, these marks serve as a texture created by time, giving the piece its unique depth and character. The box possesses a humble yet powerful presence—a true embodiment of wabi-sabi, the beauty of imperfection and age.
The interior remains sturdy, offering ample storage capacity. It has been thoroughly cleaned, ensuring it can be used safely and comfortably. Its low, elongated proportions make it highly versatile: ideal as a low coffee table, a book table, a side table, or a display platform. Simply placing it in a modern interior instantly adds a sense of calm and visual depth.
