About the Item
Important and beautifully painted, this depiction of the handsome god Adonis, weak and stumbling after a wild boar attack, was made by Erik Stæhr-Nielsen, a Danish artist, in 1921. The surrounding forest is painted in deep blues and black, creating a foreboding mood that anticipates Adonis' death, though the tree to his left is curving and bending in sympathy with the nude figure. Stæhr-Nielsen painted another scene with the dying Adonis around the same time, which was featured in a 1989-90 exhibition sponsored by Sophienholm, the Aarhus Art Museum and Sønderjyllands Kunstmuseum in Denmark. He was a peripheral member of the modernist art movement in Denmark around World War I, and was deeply influenced by his travels to Sierra Leone and Senegal. The painting is oil on canvas.
