About the Item

Superb watercolor on paper depicting a young spinner in traditional Italian costume, probably of Neapolitan or southern Italian origin. The young woman, seen in profile, holds a distaff and a spindle, symbols of feminine craftsmanship. She stands out elegantly against a backdrop of steep rocks, in a composition that is both understated and full of character. The artist, clearly sensitive to popular genre scenes, pays homage here to Italian rural life with great precision of observation and remarkable finesse of execution. The care given to the draperies, embroidery, and costume details reflects an ethnographic attention typical of 19th-century Italian painters, particularly in Naples, Rome, and Florence. The palette, dominated by warm tones—ochres, reds, and browns—and enlivened by light highlights, gives the whole a soft and naturalistic harmony. The model's graceful and dignified pose evokes compositions by artists such as Filippo Palizzi or Domenico Morelli, although the watercolor work seems very close to that of Vincenzo Caprile. Presented in an antique gilt fluted frame, this work captivates with its fresh execution and picturesque authenticity. At sight: 41 × 21.5 cm (≈ 16.1 × 8.5 in) With frame: 56 × 37 cm (≈ 22 × 14.6 in) A fine-quality Italian watercolor, typical of the 19th-century taste for popular figures and rural scenes. A work full of charm and sincerity, ideal for collectors of 19th-century Italian art or to enhance a classical and refined interior.
