Period: Early 1900s
The Soap Bubble Game in Lithography by the Friends of the Arts, Paris, 1900
Located in Argenteuil, IDF
Beautiful lithograph on wove paper with a watermark, BFK Rives, signed, titled, and published by the Société Française des Amis des Arts around 1900. Title "Les bulles de savon" (The Soap Bubble Game) lithographed by Jules-Gabriel Dubois-Menant (1855-1921), after the painting by Joseph Bail (1862-1921) The lithograph is in very good condition with a small amount of sunning on the right edge of the sheet that will not be visible when the print is framed. Dimensions: "Les bulles de savon" print: Sheet: 320 x 456 mm - Engraving: 210 x 305 mm + signature Engraved signature: Duboismenant below the lithograph on the right & Embossed stamp/Signature of the Société Française des Amis des Arts below the print in the lower right corner. Jules Gabriel Dubois-Menant (1855-1921) was a French painter, lithographer, and photographer specializing in portraiture. In addition to portraits painted in oils and pastels, he produced original and reproduction lithographs. He was a member of the Society of French Lithographers, for which he wrote a booklet. He participated in the series of Painters-Lithographers albums from 1892 onward, and later joined the Society of Painters-Lithographers. One of his notable lithographs is The Old Goat Sheepfold, as well as a portrait of Jules Verne (Salon of 1897). Joseph Bail (1862-1921) was a French naturalist painter. Younger brother of the painter Franck Bail (1858-1924), Joseph Bail received his first training from his father, Antoine Jean Bail (1830-1919), a practitioner of the realist tradition of genre subjects, before passing through the studios of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Carolus-Duran[2]. As a teenager, he produced his first still lifes in 1878 (Sea Fish and Oysters). A year later, he presented works at the Salon des Artistes Français. A few years later, he became one of the youngest recipients of the medal of honor for his painting Trinkets from the Cluny Museum at the Salon of 1886, then for his famous The Kitchen Boy (1887). Passionate about the world of gastronomy, he painted food as much as those who helped to prepare it. He portrays the kitchen boys in different ways in La Cigarette ou Le Repos (1892), as well as in La Besogne faite (1893), where the young assistant, slumped on a chair, casually smokes a cigarette. He continued in the same vein with Les Cuisiniers (1894), Reflections of the Sun (1895), and Battle of Dogs (1896). He received the gold medal at the 1900 World's Fair for three major works: Le Goûter (Tea Time), Bulles de savon (Soap Bubbles), and La Servante (The Maid).[4] The Société Française des Amis des Arts was founded in 1885 at the Palais de l'Industrie for the development of the arts, supported by numerous eminent subscribers: Messrs. Gaston Doumergue (President of the French Republic), Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Count Greffulhe, the brothers Alfred, Jules and Léon Bernheim, Louis Boucheron, Edgar Brandt, Emile Buland, Paul Chabas, Viscount Guy de Dampierre, Colonel Francis E. Drake, André Fallières, Louis Lévy, Paul Louchet, Maurice Moisset, Louis Montagné...

1900 Three-Sheet Theater Poster
By Russell-Morgan Co. 1
Located in Peekskill, NY
This was an estate find and part of a beautiful collection of rare excellent turn of the century posters. They were hidden away for over 100 years. This is a rare and impressive 3 sheet poster that is 7 foot tall. It make quite a statement. About the poster: You'd think that a play called "The New Baby" might feature said child in its promotional material. But here's the thing - there really isn't a baby at the centre of the comedy, and that's the crux of this entertainment. The plot concerns a husband who is so bored with country life that he dreams up the idea of having an illegitimate son in London as a way to get into town for an occasional 'night off'. When his wife decides that the child should be adopted, the expected comic tissue of falsehoods and misunderstandings frays and hilarity ensues. Adapted from German by A. Bourchier, the farce opened in London in 1896 to what a local critic termed 'much mirth'. Several years later, when the play had crossed the Atlantic and entered the repertory of David de Wolf cleverly called the Baby's chaperone on the poster and his troupe of traveling players, that understated review was translated into the more American howling success. The cast and director would've been totally unfamiliar with the British hinterlands, so this splendid design concentrates on the hi-jinks of the characters and their situation. At the start of the 20th century, America was in the full glory of its cultural adolescence, bursting with energy and optimism. In 1900 in New York there were 33 legitimate Broadway theaters...

Located in Argenteuil, IDF
Rare and beautiful etching on wove paper with a watermark, BFK Rives, signed, titled, and published by the Société Française des Amis des Arts around 1900. Title "BAPTEME DANS LA BASSE-ALSACE" engraved by Léopold Flameng (1831-1911), after the painting by his son François Flameng (1856-1923) The etching and plate are in perfect condition, with slight fading on the fringed edges. Dimensions: "Baptème dans la Basse-Alsace" etching: Sheet: 325 x 460 mm - Engraving: 200 x 254 mm - Engraving plate: 250 x 300 mm Engraved signature: Léop. Flameng under the engraving in the center Engraved signature François Flameng 1890-91 in the engraving lower right & Blank signature of the Société Française des Amis des Arts under the engraving lower left. Léopold Flameng, Belgian painter and engraver, was born to French parents. He was a student of Luigi Calamatta and Jean Gigoux. His skill as a burinist brought him to the attention of Charles Blanc, and his collaboration on publications such as L'Artiste and the Gazette des beaux-arts, with Léon Gaucherel, was one of the first engravers for this magazine, which would establish his reputation. Georges Duplessis, art historian, quotes him in a work published in 1869: "Léopold Flameng rose in his time to the rank of master." He received a medal at the 1878 World's Fair. Known for his etchings after Jan van Eyck, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Ingres, and Eugène Delacroix, he illustrated several books on Paris as well as numerous literary works by classical and contemporary authors, including Boccaccio, Paul Scarron, Victor Hugo, and François Coppée. François Flameng was the son of the famous painter and engraver Léopold Flameng. He attended the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris for his secondary education. Learning to paint from his father, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel, then in those of Pierre Edmond Alexandre Hédouin and Jean-Paul Laurens. As early as 1870, he produced several reproductions of works by painters Alfred Sisley, Édouard Manet, and Claude Monet for the catalog of the Durand-Ruel Gallery. In 1875, he made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français with his painting "Le Lectern." He received numerous commissions for portraits, historical scenes, and decorative paintings. His academic style, combining precise drawing and mastery of color, appealed to the bourgeoisie and aristocracy of the time. During his career, François Flameng was elevated to the rank of Officer of the Legion of Honor and elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He left behind a considerable artistic legacy. His works, preserved in the world's greatest museums, bear witness to his exceptional talent and his significant contribution to French art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Société Française des Amis des Arts was founded in 1885 at the Palais de l'Industrie for the development of the arts, supported by numerous distinguished subscribers: Messrs. Gaston Doumergue (President of the French Republic), Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Count Greffulhe, the brothers Alfred, Jules, and Léon Bernheim, Louis Boucheron, Edgar Brandt, Emile Buland, Paul Chabas, Viscount Guy de Dampierre, Colonel Francis E. Golf Painting by John Blair, Craigmillar Park G C
Located in Oxfordshire, GB
Craigmillar Park Golf Club Watercolour, John Blair. An atmospheric original watercolour of Craigmillar Park Golf Links in Edinburgh by the Scottish artist John Blair (1849-1934). Craigmillar Castle from which the club derives its name from is clearly seen in the background and the painting is signed to the lower left corner. Craigmillar Castle was a haunt of Mary Queen of Scots, the world's first recorded lady golfer. How ironic then, that since the golf club's inception equality of the sexes was the rule at Craigmillar Park. John Blair was a Scottish painter, predominantly of watercolour landscapes. Of humble beginnings in Berwickshire, he moved to Edinburgh to study and spent the rest of his life there. His paintings mainly reflect the landscapes around him, both of urban settings and also of the castles, sea and lochs of the Borders. As well as his original work, his paintings were viewed by a wide audience in the form of picture postcards, book endpapers and illustrations. Taken from Craigmillar Park Golf Club website:- Craigmillar Park Golf Club was constituted in 1895 and moved to its present location in 1907. It was extended to 18 holes (designed by James Braid) in 1927. On 12th of January 1895 the Scotsman newspaper carried the following "birth" announcement : "NEW GOLF COURSE IN THE SOUTH SIDE OF EDINBURGH. A nine-hole golf course is being formed at Craigmillar Park and is expected to be ready for play in February. A lease of the ground which extends from Crawfurd Road to Lady Road has been obtained from Captain Gordon Gilmour of Liberton and Craigmillar. The principal entrance will be from Crawfurd Road within three minutes' walk of the Craigmillar Park car terminus and Newington Suburban Station. The course is about a mile in length and has been laid out by Mr. Day of Musselburgh, who has given a very favourable report of the suitability of the ground for the purpose. Already about 150 ladies and gentlemen have been admitted as members of the club." Many, perhaps most, of the new clubs created about the same time as Craigmillar Park were (and some continue) as male preserves. It is clear that from the outset equality of the sexes was the rule at Craigmillar Park, although it was not until 1914 that the subscriptions were equalised. The course was situated in an area of land close to Newington Railway Station and the Newington Bus and Tram Terminus and was thus, easily accessible. In those days there was very little building development between the course and the iconic Craigmillar Castle from which the club derives its name. The castle was a haunt of Mary Queen of Scots, the world's first recorded lady golfer. How ironic then, that since the golf club's inception, ladies have had equal status with men and there was no gender barrier to any office. This was in an age when golf clubs were regarded as male preserves. In 1914, ladies started paying exactly the same subscription as their male counterparts and this has remained right up to the present day. When you consider that all women did not get the vote until 1928, Craigmillar Park Golf Club were indeed trendsetters! Despite the club's early success, with 400 members and a waiting list, they were dealt a blow when their course at Newington was taken over for housing development. They decided, rather than to disband, to relocate the golf course to the eastern slopes of the Blackford Hill in 1907. Once again the close proximity of Blackford Railway Station and Bus Terminus were factors in their decision making. Another factor in choosing Blackford Hill was the potential for increasing the length of the 9 holes that had been played for in the course at Newington and possibly even converting the new course to 18 holes at some future date. This is in fact what happened and James Braid designed a splendid 18 hole course which officially opened in 1927. The new course was a real test of golf with no two holes being the same. The course boasts marvellous views over Edinburgh and Fife and down the coast to the Berwick Law, Bass Rock...

"Ogalala Woman" by Edward S. Curtis, 1908
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is a fine photogravure portrait of an Ogalala woman by Edward Curtis. The image is Plate 94 from Supplementary Portfolio 3 of Edward Curtis' epic project The North American Indian. The caption provided by Curtis for this image is “A face so strong that it is almost masculine, showing strikingly how slight may be the difference between the male and female physiognomy in some Primitive people.” The photograph was taken in 1907 and the photogravure was published in 1908 by John Andrew & Son, in Boston. Edward S. Curtis created one of the most enduring and iconic visual records in the history of the photographic medium. He was an award-winning artist, a consummate craftsman, a visionary, an intrepid entrepreneur, and was highly regarded as a respected ethnographer and publisher. Curtis began photographing Native Americans in the mid-1890s and selling these images in his successful Downtown Seattle studio. One of his earliest models was Princess Angeline, the aged daughter of chief Sealth, the Suquamish Indian after whom Seattle is named. At the National Photographic Convention of 1899 Curtis was awarded the grand prize for three of his soft-focused, sepia-toned images of Puget Sound Native Americans: Evening on the Sound, The Clam Digger, and The Mussel Gatherer. Curtis spent the summer of 1900 with George Bird Grinnell observing the Sun Dance at an encampment of Blood, Blackfeet, and Algonquin in Montana. This was a pivotal experience for Curtis, confirming his desire to study and photograph the Native tribes of North America. A trip to visit the Hopi reservation in Arizona a few months later further fueled his enthusiasm. Curtis envisioned a plan to create a massive scholarly and artistic work that would document the tribes west of the Mississippi, their ceremonies, beliefs, daily life, and landscapes. In 1906, Curtis approached railroad tycoon J.P. Morgan to request financial assistance for his project. Morgan agreed to pay him a total of $75,000, or $15,000 a year for five years. Morgan and Curtis decided that Curtis' masterwork, The North American Indian, would be a set of 20 volumes of ethnographic text illustrated with high quality photoengravings taken from his glass plate negatives. Each of these volumes would be accompanied by a portfolio of large Size images, all sumptuously bound in Moroccan leather. The papers used for printing would also be of the best quality: a Dutch etching stock by Van Gelder, a Japanese vellum, and for the most discerning subscribers, a translucent Japanese tissue paper. To fund publication, Curtis would sell subscriptions at approximately $3,000 per set, with a total of 500 sets to be published. An ambitious and extensive project, Curtis spent much of his life documenting as many Native tribes as possible. The importance and the urgency of the task was clear to him, as he wrote in the introduction to his first volume of The North American Indians in 1907, "The information that is to be gathered . respecting the mode of life of one of the great races of mankind, must be collected at once or the opportunity will be lost." In 1930, some 24 years after his initial request for funding, the last two volumes, Vol. 19 and Vol. 20, were published and The North American Indian project was finally completed. Curtis took over 40,000 photographs and made over 10,000 wax cylinder...
