The Distinguished Black Dutch White-Crested Chicken - Rare 19th Century Poultry
Located in Langweer, NL
The Distinguished Black Dutch White-Crested Chicken A Rare 19th Century Poultry Lithograph This striking 19th century chromolithograph showcases a pair of Black Dutch White-Crested chickens, an ornamental breed admired for its elegant black plumage, dramatic white crest, and refined posture. The print, titled Zwarte Hollandsche Witkuiven, originates from Geïllustreerd Hoenderboek, an Illustrated Poultry Book published in 1888 by Elsevier. Compiled by Julius Volschau and adapted for Dutch readers by Dr. A. C. Oudemans Jzn., this book provided an extensive study of poultry breeding, highlighting both practical and decorative breeds that were highly valued in the 19th century. The White-Crested Black Dutch chicken is closely related to the Polish breed, sharing its distinctive feathered crest but with a stronger historical connection to the Netherlands. These birds were particularly favored for their striking contrast of jet black plumage and a full, bright white crest, making them highly desirable for ornamental poultry collections. The breed was known for its calm nature, excellent foraging ability, and consistent white egg production. This lithograph was produced using chromolithography, a highly detailed 19th century printing technique that allowed for richly colored and finely rendered illustrations. The artwork is based on an original drawing by Christian Förster, a renowned animal illustrator of the time. Chromolithographs were created by layering multiple colors, each applied with a separate stone plate, ensuring depth and realism in the final print. The intricate feather detailing and dramatic contrast between the birds' black bodies and snowy white crests in this print highlight the craftsmanship involved in this technique. Condition Summary The print remains in very good condition, with well preserved colors and intricate details. Some minor age related toning and light foxing spots are visible, particularly along the edges, which is common in lithographs of this period. The paper remains stable, with minimal signs of wear, making this an excellent collectible piece for antique poultry print...

The Fat Boy from Pickwick Papers – Victorian Print by “Kyd” after Dickens, 1889
Located in Langweer, NL
The Fat Boy from Pickwick Papers – Comic Victorian Print by “Kyd” after Dickens Description: This original chromolithograph from circa 1889 features “The Fat Boy,” one of the most iconic comic characters from Charles Dickens’s *The Pickwick Papers* (1836–37). Rendered in full color by the celebrated British caricaturist Joseph Clayton Clarke, better known as “Kyd,” this image captures the drowsy servant of Mr Wardle in all his sleepy, portly glory. The Fat Boy is a humorous character remembered for his insatiable appetite, constant dozing off, and deadpan responses. His most famous line—“I wants to make your flesh creep”—has amused generations of Dickens readers. In this illustration, he stands with a dazed, indifferent expression, hands tucked into his coat pockets, and his impressive girth accentuated by the tailored blue uniform and tall black boots...

Wonderful Late 19th-Early 20th Berlin K.P.M. Porcelain Rectangular Plaque
Located in Long Island City, NY
A wonderful late 19th-early 20th Berlin K.P.M. porcelain rectangular plaque Painted landscape scene with two women and their children playing, the background with two men, one playing an instrument. Impressed K.P.M and scepter marks, in the original frame. KPM is an acronym for Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin, which translates to “Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin.” The company was founded in 1763 by Frederick II of Prussia, who bought the factory from its previous owner, Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky, in the wake of its bankruptcy. Frederick II greatly admired the factory’s “white gold,” a type of porcelain so fine and translucent that it closely mirrored the high-quality porcelain made in China. He invested large sums of money into the company and granted it the use of the royal scepter...

Rare Dutch Church Interior Rozenburg Porcelain Tile Painting After J. Bosboom
Located in Lisse, NL
Beautiful large tile painting of a Gothic church interior by W.B. van Horssen (1863-1931). We very recently purchased a small collection of very rare antique plaques, tiles and vases by some of the best known maker's in the history of Dutch ceramics. This unique, hand-crafted and hand-painted work of art is the first one of that collection and this stunning and rare, single tiles plaque is in its original wooden frame. Because of their contrasting colors, the frame and tile painting go together really well. And these are in fact two works of art, because both the stunningly hand-painted tile and the wooden frame are as good as they come. With the borders of the frame coming as far outward as they do and the Gothic church interior that is drawing your attention deep into the back of the church, they really complement each other. However beautiful the frame is, this antique ofcourse is about the painting and this particular painting is by one of Rozenburg's finest (Wijnand Bastiaan van Horssen) who has perfectly managed to enhance the depth that is already in this composition, thus creating a visual effect that is an absolute joy to look at. By the way, the price that you see on the 'sticker' that the former owner put on the back after he had purchased this piece was put there in the 'old days' when we still had the Dutch guilder. The original painting of the Nieuwe Kerk in the Hague Holland (built in circa 1650) was by J. Bosboom. Besides one small old crack and a few minor imperfections to the frame, this unique and wonderful work of art is in very good condition still and may it grace the home or chapel of a Gothic style enthousiast soon. Mind you, because of their relative fragility very few of these amazing and high value works of art are still around. Rozenburg of the Hague, where this unique tile painting was created, was always one of the greats in Dutch ceramics and many of their works grace museums all over Europe. Rozenburg’s shareholders included the likes of the marine painter H.W. Mesdag (1831-1915) and the poet and literary critic Carel Vosmaer (1826-1888), and its tile painters numbered rising artists like Willem de Zwart...
