Seated Spanish Nobleman: The Visage of Authority, 1847
Located in Langweer, NL
Title: "Seated Spanish Nobleman: The Visage of Authority" Description: This original antique detailed print portrays a Spanish nobleman from the Middle Ages, seated in a commanding position that denotes his high social status and authority. He is depicted in a stately pose, exuding an air of confident repose that reflects his powerful position within the societal hierarchy. The nobleman is dressed in a long blue tunic, a color often associated with nobility and depth of character. His tunic is complemented by a rose-colored undershirt, a combination that suggests both wealth and taste. Over his attire drapes a heavy, deep blue cloak, a mark of his status, which provides both warmth and an impression of gravitas. On his head, he wears a broad-brimmed green hat, which is both a stylish and practical accessory, shading his eyes and symbolizing his affinity with the outdoors and perhaps his participation in hunting, a favorite pastime of the nobility. His footwear consists of red shoes, possibly made of fine leather or velvet, adding a striking contrast to his ensemble. The nobleman's demeanor is one of contemplation, with a hand resting on a money pouch at his belt, indicating his control over wealth and economic affairs. The chair in which he sits is adorned with simple yet elegant ornamentation, including a valance with floral motifs, signifying a connection to nature and his domain. The setting is minimalistic, focusing the viewer’s attention on the nobleman’s figure and attire. Through this print, we gain insight into the fashion and symbols of status that were prevalent among the Spanish nobility...

Sailor s Woolwork of The British Ship Gold Finder on her voyage to Australia
Located in Downingtown, PA
Sailor's Woolwork Nautical Picture, Inscribed:The British Ship Gold Finder on her voyage to Melbourn, August 2, 1864. Worked by T.J. Francis, Circa 1864 This sailor's woolwork depicts aportside view of the the Gold Finder. The Gold Finder was a 3-masted iron ship built in 1863 by J. Laing of Sunderland. There is a detailed inscription below including the maker's name- T.J. Francis. A notice in the Liverpool Mercury on Tuesday May 3, 1853......This ship is expected to sail very fast, has all her passenger arrangements on a novel and peculiar plan, affording an amount of light and ventilation such as no other passenger ship ever possessed. The ships bell has recently been acquired by the Merseyside Maritime Museum. It seems though that the ship's description involved a degree of hyperbole as she was in fact laid down as a coal ship and converted to passenger accommodation later to meet the demand for the Gold Rush in Australia. Dimensions: Framed: 28 3/10 inches high x 31 inches wide (72cm x 79 cm). The Australian gold rush started after Edward Hargraves found the precious metal in New South Wales in 1851. He was not the first to discover gold but is credited with launching the stampede when thousands tried their luck at unearthing wealth - and some succeeded. Hargraves (1816-1891), a former hotelier and cattle farmer, played a small part in the California gold rush of 1849. He didn't get rich but met people who knew about gold and where it could be found - they pointed out similarities between California and New South Wales. Hargraves headed back to Australia to test these theories and stake a claim for a Government reward for the discovery of viable gold fields. Despite initial setbacks, he organised fellow prospectors in the quest for gold which was successful. Hargraves was granted massive rewards of more than pounds 12,000 and later a pension of pounds 250 a year. He was born in Gosport, Hampshire, the son of an army officer, and educated at Lewes and Brighton Grammar School. Hargraves joined the merchant navy before arriving at Sydney in 1832 and marrying Eliza Mackie four years later. Publicity about the gold rush prompted many migrants to sail from Liverpool to seek their fortunes - the first licence was issued in Victoria on 21 September 1851. Australia's population boomed as the emigrants...

The Stature of a Milanese Noble: An Lithographic Artistic Depiction, 1847
Located in Langweer, NL
Title: "The Stature of a Milanese Noble: An Artistic Depiction from 'Costume du Moyen Âge'" Description: This finely detailed lithograph is part of the 1847 seminal work "Costume du Moyen Âge," which portrays a Milanese nobleman, attired in the fashion of the Middle Ages. The nobleman stands in a dignified pose, with a slight turn to the side that suggests movement or the commencement of an address. His garment is a robust, terracotta-hued robe, which falls in heavy folds to the ground, indicating the weight and quality of the fabric. The robe features elegant blue cuffs and a blue collar, which provide a contrast to the warm primary color and are adorned with diamond-shaped embellishments, implying a subtle yet unmistakable wealth. Atop his head sits a distinctive chapeau with a jaunty feather, adding a touch of personal flair to his ensemble. This hat, along with his full, neatly groomed beard, contributes to the air of wisdom and experience that the nobleman exudes. His expression is one of contemplation and sagacity, with eyes that appear to be observing or assessing the scene before him. As in other plates from the collection, the background is left intentionally plain, directing the viewer’s focus to the subject and his elaborate attire. This lithograph not only captures the fashion and dignity of a nobleman from Milan but also serves as a cultural and historical record, revealing the meticulous attention to detail in costume design and social hierarchy of the time. The lithograph serves as a visual study of the mores and attire of the period, crafted with reverence for the historical accuracy and an appreciation for the aesthetics of medieval clothing...

The individual is depicted in ecclesiastical robes that reflect his status within the church hierarchy. English Archer in Mid-Draw, Costume Di Moyen Age, 1847
Located in Langweer, NL
This original antique print depicts an English archer in the act of drawing his longbow, a weapon for which English soldiers were famous during the medieval period. He's dressed in a red garment with a detailed breastplate, and a sword at his side. The longbow was a key English military advantage during conflicts such as the Hundred Years' War. The archer's pose captures the tension and focus required to use the longbow effectively. The source for this print is Costume Di Moyen Age, published 1847. More about the vivid colors of this original hand-colored antique print: The colors have a nice glow over them. Historically, egg whites, known as glair, and sometimes egg yolk were indeed used in illumination and painting, particularly in manuscripts, to give colors a brighter appearance and to add a sheen or gloss to the work. This technique was quite common during the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance. Egg whites can be applied as a varnish over pigments to enhance their brightness and to protect the colors. This application could make the colors appear more vivid and also add a slight glossy sheen to the surface of the image. Egg yolk, on the other hand, was commonly used as a binding agent in paint. It forms the basis of tempera paint, a medium that was widely used before the advent of oil painting...

Courtly Splendor: A Nobleman at Emperor Sigismund s Court, 1847
Located in Langweer, NL
The image depicts a man identified as a "Gentilhomme de la cour de Sigismond, empereur d'Allemagne," which translates to "Gentleman of the court of Sigismund, Emperor of Germany." This individual is portrayed in a profile stance, dressed in attire that is indicative of the high-status courtiers during the time of Emperor Sigismund, who reigned in the early 15th century. He is wearing a turban-like headgear, which reflects the influence of Eastern fashion on European court attire, possibly due to the Ottoman influence or the general exchange of culture during the Crusades and subsequent interactions. His doublet is richly patterned and he has puffed sleeves in red, which were fashionable among the nobility during the period. The garment is accented with a decorative belt that holds what appears to be a purse or a pouch. He also sports tight blue hose and pointed shoes, which complete the ensemble typical of a nobleman or a high-ranking court official in the Holy Roman Empire. Egg whites can be applied as a varnish over pigments to enhance their brightness and to protect the colors. This application could make the colors appear more vivid and also add a slight glossy sheen to the surface of the image. Egg yolk, on the other hand, was commonly used as a binding agent in paint. It forms the basis of tempera paint, a medium that was widely used before the advent of oil painting. Egg yolk helps to create a durable and long-lasting color that adheres well to various surfaces. In the context of the print from 1847, it's less likely that egg whites or yolks were used directly on the print, as by that time, commercial printing processes would have been more advanced and less reliant on such manual methods. However, if this print is a representation of an earlier style or is meant to mimic the appearance of hand-painted manuscripts...
