There are places that call to you—sites with a magnetic pull. For more than twenty years I have returned to the island of Menorca (Balearic Islands, Spain) with my family to reconnect with its powerful nature and with friends. Walking its paths and coastlines awakens the senses; it is a time to pay attention, to stay open to the importance of small things—the details within the immeasurable. In that state, the visit becomes one of reflection, meditation, and silence.
True luxury—great joy—is simply being there: before the persistence of the waves, wide horizons, endless blues, the ceaseless shifts of light, and the scents carried on every breeze. I also feel a particular pull toward the objects the sea returns to us as a warning and deposits in those wild coves.
These 2,121 lighters, every single one of them, were found and gathered at the waterline during my wanderings along the coves of the island’s north. I am drawn to the beauty of these small objects. Sun, salt, seawater, sand, rock, and wind have eroded the lighters into miniature sculptures; the patina of time has given them new and compelling forms, textures, and colors—chance did the rest. Once collected, transported, and sorted—almost methodically—I photographed them in my Barcelona studio, stripped of any reference, shot top-down against a luminous ground.
These images are a modest testimony to the millions upon millions of seemingly harmless, short-lived devices—none biodegradable—that continue to be scattered across the planet. We have the “astronomical” data on global plastic pollution at our fingertips. There is no time left for excuses. We will endure the disastrous consequences of our excessive caution if we do not look for solutions together and demand accountability from those intent on keeping things as they are.
