About the Item

Framed archival pigment print from Nicholas Alan Cope's inaugural book and accompanying 2014 New York solo exhibition at Mondo Cane / Patrick Parrish Gallery, “WHITEWASH”. Edition of 5 + 1AP. Photo dimensions: 20” x 30”. Framed dimensions: 30” x 40”. Cope's photographs evoke a unique vision of Los Angeles and it's contrasts as seen exclusively through its everyday architecture. Searching for the sublime core of the city's true nature, Cope strips away the extraneous and focuses on the sheer beauty and simplicity of the cityscape. To an outsider, the profound cultural, historical, and architectural imprint of the City of Angels can be lost amongst the unsightly sprawl of stucco, strip malls, and irrelevant adornment. While the sunlight can be unforgiving and harsh, bleaching the landscape into a pale hue, the allure, for Cope, lies in the consistency and ubiquity of the buildings combined with the severity of the light accentuating the dramatic elegance of the architecture. Whitewash utilizes the whitest whites, the blackest blacks, and the modern and stark architecture of an idealized future that never arrived to tell the visual story of LA's uniquely conflicted soul. NICHOLAS ALAN COPE was raised in Maryland and moved to Los Angeles in the early 2000s to attend the Art Center College of Design. He has since shot for a number of commercial and editorial clients while working on personal projects. Cope works in collaboration with creative director Dustin Edward Arnold on a number of his projects as well as an ongoing publication of their own creation. He has been the recipient of numerous awards as well as inclusion in PDN’s 30 in 2011. Book projects have included Whitewash (2013), Manus x Machina (2016), Rei Kawakubo/Comme Des Garçons: Art of the In-Between (2017), and Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams (2017).

Vintage NASA Photograph of Apollo 11 Moon Landing
By Meisel Photochrome Corporation
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Patrick Parrish is excited to offer an incredible group of original photographs printed by Meisel Photochrome Corporation of Dallas around 1970, shortly after the Apollo 11 Mission. Meisel was the official photo contractor for NASA and processed all the images from the Apollo missions. These beautiful vintage 8” x 8” chromogenic prints on Kodak paper are framed in a 13" x 13" frames and currently available at the gallery. NASA’s historic Apollo 11 Mission—crewed by astronauts Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin, and commander Neil Armstrong—departed earth on July 16th, 1969, and landed on the moon four days later, near the Sea of Tranquility, while 500 million people watched on television. Armstrong and Aldrin spent two and a half hours exploring the surface of the moon, collecting samples and taking photographs. The camera they used was a modified 70mm Hasselblad lunar surface camera, designed specifically for the event. During the Mission, nine magazines of 70mm film were exposed, providing panoramic views of the surface near the lunar module...
