Don Hong-Oai was born in Canton, China but raised and educated in Saigon, Vietnam. At age 13 he began an apprenticeship at a Chinese photo and portrait shop. In 1979 he immigrated to the United States and settled in the Chinatown of San Francisco.
Don began making a living by selling his landscape photographs in front of Macy’s and began to receive recognition for his craftsmanship. His style was heavily influenced by the legendary photographer Long Chin...

This large black and white hand printed silver gelatin photograph of "Michel Nude" by the legendary fashion icon, Michael Roberts, London. This image was part of a Michael Roberts show in 1989 at Hamilton's gallery, London. Signed on back. Black metal simple frame. Image: 15" x 19", framed: 22' x 26".
This image is one of two that were in the gallery show in London. The images from the show were very rare and now highly sought after and collected after Mr. Robert's death but there are NONE available to purchase. These two images were purchased from that Exhibit from Hamiltons. The second one, "Nude of Michel" is available on separate listing. We hope they are purchased together as they were hung next to each other in the exhibit.
MICHAEL ROBERTS:
The preferred medium of the fashion journalist Michael Roberts was Canson art paper, which he scissored freehand into crisp-cut collages, or snipped into minute dots to reassemble into mosaics, for magazine covers or book illustrations. His art, bit by bit putting it together, reflected his life in fashion. He wrote about it, commissioned unexpected others to do so, photographed for media and ads, and charmed cranky legendary lensmen into snapping for him. He could source the clothes, choose the crazy locale, stage the shoot’s story, and write a witty critique of the enterprise. He was also always the most elegant person involved, effortlessly cool.
Roberts, who has died aged 75, never bothered with a résumé, since every new role or venture seemed to just develop, but they totted up to a serious career. He was a writer on the Sunday Times in the 1970s, when new couture catwalk drama and heightened designer celebrity demanded a fashion voice that was both theatre critic and gossip columnist. A framed photograph by Chinese American photographer Don Hong-Oai (1929-2004) "The Intimate Shadow", a composed landscape photograph taken in Quilin, the world-famous scenic area in China. Signed with title, inscription of location and dated on the top -left, red sealed on the lower right corner and signed and dated 1982 lower left on the mat. The photograph depicts an idyllic scenery on Li-river with the karst peak in the misty background, where a fishing boat floats. The work was created with dark room manipulation to echo the traditional chines ink painting that showcase a surreal ambience. The photograph is housed in the original artist's archive metal frame with an old print of the artist's bio and copyright mark on the back. It was purchased directly from the artist's studio. Sight Approximately 13.625" w x 10.125" h.
Don Hong-Oai was born in Canton, China but raised and educated in Saigon, Vietnam. At age 13 he began an apprenticeship at a Chinese photo and portrait shop. In 1979 he immigrated to the United States and settled in the Chinatown of San Francisco.
Don began making a living by selling his landscape photographs in front of Macy’s and began to receive recognition for his craftsmanship. His style was heavily influenced by the legendary photographer Long Chin-San and his technique of layering negatives for ideal composition, by taking three negatives, foreground, middle ground, and far ground, and selecting a subject from each negative. The photographs of Don Hong-Oai are made in a unique style, which can be considered Asian pictorialism. This method of adapting a Western art for Eastern purposes probably originated in the 1940s in Hong Kong. One of its best-known practitioners was the great master Long Chin-San (who died in the 1990s at the age of 104) with whom Don Hong-Oai studied. With the delicate beauty and traditional motifs of Chinese painting (birds, boats, mountains, etc.) in mind, photographers of this school used more than one negative to create a beautiful picture, often using visual allegories. About: Jane's Addiction:
Jane's Addiction is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1985. The band consists of vocalist Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Chris Chaney. The band has been credited for inspiring the alternative rock movement of the 1990s. They have released four studio albums, including their breakthrough album Nothing's Shocking in 1988 and Ritual de lo Habitual in 1990.
The band was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1985. Founder and singer Perry Farrell found bassist Eric Avery, who then brought on drummer Stephen Perkins and finally guitarist Dave Navarro, after auditioning many players. Jane’s Addiction became a sensation on the Los Angeles club scene and a staple on the Sunset Strip. The band’s original line-up featured Perry Farrell (vocals), Dave Navarro (guitar), Eric Avery (bass) and Stephen Perkins (drums). Jane’s Addiction was one of the first bands to emerge from the early 1990s alternative rock movement to gain mainstream media attention and commercial success in the United States. They recorded Nothing’s Shocking in 1988 (so they are celebrating 25-years in 2013!) and Ritual De Lo Habitual in 1990, both on Warner Brothers Records. Jane’s Addiction broke up in 1991 and their farewell tour coincided with Farrell founding the first Lollapalooza festival, an alternative rock showcase and lifestyle festival that is still to this day one of the most influential music festivals in the world. As a result, Jane’s Addiction became icons of what is dubbed the “Alternative Nation.” In 1997 Jane’s Addiction united briefly with Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Flea filling in on bass. Then in 2001 the band reconnected with Chris Chaney on bass and released the album Strays, produced by legendary producer Bob Ezrin. “Superhero” from this album became the theme song for HBO’s hit show Entourage. Farrell, Navarro, Perkins and Chaney returned in to release their fourth studio album, The Great Escape Artist, and toured the world.

"The Cramps were a wonderfully wild 'n' wacky punk alternative psychobilly rock 'n' roll band. The group was first formed by lead singer Lux Interior and guitarist Poison Ivy Rorschach in 1976 in New York City (Interior and Ivy initially crossed paths in Sacramento, California in 1972). The other original band members were drummer Miriam Linna and guitarist Bryan Gregory. The Cramps are distinguished by their deliciously campy 'n' crazy sensibility, wholehearted passion for both old-fashioned straight 'n' simple retro 50s rock music and entertainingly trashy grade B movies, and an appropriately raw 'n' bluesy full-throttle raucous rollicking sound. Their albums usually consisted of insanely inspired covers of obscure songs and delightfully deranged original compositions.
The Cramps started out playing gigs at such legendary Big Apple punk venues as CBGB's and Max's Kansas City. In June 1978 they performed a free benefit concert for the patients at the California State Mental Hospital in Napa Valley. The group released their debut EP "Gravest Hits" in 1979. This was followed by the full-length album "Songs the Lord Taught Us" in 1980. The Cramps relocated to Los Angeles in 1980. They performed in concert all over the world (they even opened for the Police in Europe in 1980!) and recorded over ten albums in a career which spanned over thirty years." (source: Woody Anders)
