About the Item

Photographic reproduction “Goethe in the Campagna” is a painting by the German artist Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, created in 1787. The painting depicts the famous German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in a rural scene in Italy, known as the Campagna. The painting was created during Goethe’s trip to Italy, which lasted from 1786 to 1788 and was of great importance for his literary and artistic development. Tischbein accompanied Goethe on parts of this trip and created several portraits of him, including “Goethe in the Campagna”. The painting shows Goethe in a relaxed pose, sitting on a stone and gazing into the distance. He wears simple clothing and holds a writing tablet and pen in his hand. In the background, an idyllic landscape with mountains and a lake can be seen. This photographic reproduction of the painting, is considered a significant example of the connection between literature and the visual arts in German cultural history. It also reflects the enthusiasm of German artists and intellectuals for Italy and its landscapes and served as an important source of inspiration for the Romantic movement.
