About the Item

This framed black and white photograph was done by the well-recognized Canadian photographer, Bruce Metcalfe in circa 1930 in the period Art Deco style. Bruce Metcalfe is known for his ability to artistically capture the interplay of light and shadows in his work, which is well represented in this example. This photograph is pencil signed on the lower right side of the inner matting, and titled: "Thistletown Ontario", in pencil of the lower left, which incidentally is a neighborhood in Toronto, Ontario Canada. A print of this image is on display at the J. Paul Getty Museum. This photograph is in its original frame under glass with the original brown backing paper.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Minor structural damages. Some browning of the original non-acid free matting and some glue residue showing at the edges of the photo as presented in the photos and consistent with age and use. The photo and signatures are in good period condition.

Sheet size: 6.6" x 8.5" Frame size: 16.75" x 20.75" Biography: Michael Kenna is a photographer who was born in Widnes, England, and is best known for his photographs of black-and-white landscapes. In his early years of education, he attended the Banbury School of Art, where he took up studies in painting and photography. He later became a student at the London College of Printing, where he began working as an artist and a photographer. Kenna is one of five children born to Irish-Catholic parents. Before discovering his passion for art, he aspired to enter the priesthood because of his Irish-Catholic background. Kenna moved to San Francisco in 1977. The photographer took his first trip to Japan in 1987, and he was deeply impressed by the terrain of the country. Over the years, Kenna has visited and photographed almost every part of Japan. These visits spawned the book Japan, which featured more than 95 photographs of the country. This book is one of 18 published works by Kenna.
