About the Item

Two Gelatin Silver Prints of India by Johnston Hoffmann, one with blind stamp depicting bathers at the Hoogly, the other of a backlit wooden boat on the Ganges. Both prints have penciled inventory numbers, size, and photographer's name on the reverse. Hindus revere the Ganges as a river descended from the heavens. Bathing in the Ganges River is a deeply sacred ritual in Hinduism, believed to purify the body and soul and cleanse one from sins. Founded in 1882 by PA Johnston and Theodore Julius Hoffmann, (Johnston Hoffmann) was the first and largest studio based in Calcutta (now Kolkata), with later branches being opened in Darjeeling, Shimla, Rangoon and Burma.
