About the Item
This listing consists of four different "Fotoesculturas" hand-carved wooden framed busts with highly detailed carved and painted garment pieces, accompanied by enlarged black and white or hand-painted photographs. The photos depicted in most cases, deceased family members. These pieces were commissioned from a collective workshop of artisans from early 1920 till late 1970 and were ubiquitous in Mexican middle-class family mantel pieces. These original objects were manufactured to remember relatives by keeping alive their memory and presence for all family members to see in a visible place of the home, a kind of “eternal life” 3-D object filled with significance and aesthetic sensitivity. It is important to note that these workshops are long gone and complete Fotoesculturas in good shape are getting harder to get by.
