About the Item

This British drama was directed by Basil Dearden and stars Jack Warner as PC Dixon, Jimmy Hanley and Dirk Bogarde. The title refers to the blue lantern that is outside British police stations to signify it as a place of safe refuge. The film inspired the 1955-1976 television series Dixon of Dock Green, where Jack Warner continued in his role as PC Dixon. James Boswell was one of Britain's foremost satirical and anti-establishment illustrators. Born and raised in New Zealand, Boswell moved to Britain at the age of 19 to study at the Royal Academy. He was twice thrown out of the prestigious institution for his radical politics and modern approach to art, but his talent as a great painter was undisputed by his contemporaries. In 1933 he joined the Communist Party and was a founder member of the AIA (Artist's International Association) Between 1934 and 1938 he was art editor of the Left Review and his biting illustrations attacked fascism abroad and over-privileged capitalists at home. He served in Iraq during the Second World War, and his haunting sketch books from this time formed an exhibition at Tate Britain in 2006. After the war, he continued to work in political and commercial art. He was art editor of Lilliput magazine from 1947 to 1950. During this period he designed three evocative film posters for Ealing Studios. This poster is conservation paper backed and would be shipped flat in a strong pack and sent by Federal Express.
